Chairperson: Ms. Toni Johnson
The Parish Social Concerns Commission has been organized to help develop pastoral plans and policies in the area of Christian service and social action.
The challenging purpose of our Social Concerns Commission is to:
♦ Seek ways to educate the parish about the social mission of the Church, so that members understand that both charity and justice are essential in living out the Gospel.
♦ Call the parish community to be involved in service and advocacy, in order to promote a just and peaceful society.
♦ Encourage and assist the parish community in responding to issues, social problems, and needs of people both through acts of charity and efforts to effect social change.
The main functions of the Social Concerns Commission are to identify the needs both in our parish and in the wider community around us, and then to establish policies and programs within our parish to address those needs. Along the way, it is important that members of the Commission build a caring Christian community among themselves.
The Parish Social Concerns Commission seeks to include as members parishioners who are interested in improving the quality of life of individuals, families, and groups of people within the parish and in the greater community, especially the poor and vulnerable. What we most look for is your desire and commitment to respond to human needs!
In the area of social concerns, social justice and social action, some work which we have been doing already at OLP is our help to WREN (Women's Re-Entry Network, for women coming out of prison and their children) through our annual Christmas Giving and Sharing Tree and other projects for these women. We are also beginning to publicize information about ways to help at the Thea Bowman Center, an outreach center connected with the former Epiphany parish in Cleveland.
Members of the SCC meet on a regular (though not set) basis, more or less once a month. WE VERY MUCH NEED MEMBERS FOR THIS IMPORTANT OUTREACH GROUP! PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US.
